Biography

HYPER-REALISM ARTIST

I am Morné van Zyl (b. 1999, Pretoria, South Africa), a contemporary hyperrealist painter based in Stellenbosch. My work focuses on large-scale oil portraiture that explores the relationship between human identity, emotion, and the natural world.
In 2024, I completed my first major large-scale oil portrait, marking the beginning of my focused exploration of hyperrealistic portraiture. Since then, my work has developed into a distinctive visual language that merges realism with symbolic botanical elements.
I now work as a full-time artist, producing large-scale paintings that investigate themes of growth, resilience, and personal transformation through the human figure.
I began developing my artistic practice after completing school in Pretoria in 2017, experimenting with various mediums including drawing, gouache, digital art, and tattooing. My background in tattooing refined my understanding of skin, anatomy, and precision, which later became foundational elements in my transition to oil painting. Each painting is created as a one-of-one original work,
allowing collectors to form a unique connection with a singular piece.

Artist Statement

My work explores the connection between human identity and the natural world through large-scale hyperrealistic portraiture. By merging the human form with botanical elements, I create symbolic narratives that reflect growth, transformation, and the evolving nature of personal identity.
While rooted in hyperrealism, my practice continues to evolve through the integration of expressive mark-making and subtle abstraction. This balance allows the work to retain the clarity of realism while revealing the artist’s hand, reminding the viewer that the image is both a portrait and a painted experience.
Each work is created as a single, original painting. I do not produce prints, as I believe every person exists only once, and the artwork reflecting that presence should carry the same sense of individuality.
I am drawn to moments of stillness and emotional presence. Through careful attention to detail and scale, my portraits invite viewers into an intimate encounter with the subject, where expression, texture, and symbolism become part of a deeper visual dialogue.
